BEFORE YOUR PUPPY COMES HOME
I have hesitated about posting additional information on this web site due to the large number of pages already on file.
However, in light of ever changing information in puppydom, I have decided to add this page of important information to our
web site.
Kennel Credentials
Many kennels boast inspection or licensing credentials from different organizations. Some dog registries, such as the American
Kennel Club (AKC), and the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) offer licensing and inspection for their breeders for a fee. Some
states require licensing and inspections for their kennel facilities. Currently, and unfortunately, Oklahoma does not yet have laws
for licensing and inspection. As one of those on the Oklahoma Board for Pet Quality Assurance, I hope we have good legislation
that passes this legislative session. It is my fervent desire to have licensing for my kennel, which is why I am working on the Pet
Quality Assurance Task Force to have legislation for licensing enacted in this state. Still other kennels in the United States are
USDA licensed and Inspected. Different cities in Oklahoma also have licensing laws for their kennels that reside in their city limits.
There are many differences in these inspections.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) inspection is mainly one of paperwork. Most generally, kennel facilities are not inspected nor
are there guidelines that i could find for AKC kennel inspection. Continental Kennel Club is a great dog registry. They have recently
established kennel licensing and inspection guidelines for their breeders that wish to submit to inspection. I hope to be accepted
for inspection by this great organization in the next few months. Those kennels that submit to their inspection are called a
"preferred kennel" and are randomly inspected. USDA is the United States Department of Agriculture. They license kennels who
broker their puppies to wholesalers, who then ship those puppies all over the nation to pet shops. A quick google search of
"puppies sold to pet brokers" by anyone can give the searcher nightmares from the pictures of puppies sold to pet shops and the
horrors many of them endure on their trip (this is not to say that all brokers are bad brokers, by any means). Any kennel who is
USDA licensed likely sells to pet brokers. We do not sell to brokers nor are we USDA licensed. However, when I was asked to join
the Oklahoma Task Force for Pet Quality Assurance, the team leader for our area visited our nursery and was impressed by Puppy
Love Farms, and stated that we exceed USDA standards for licensure. At any rate, I would caution anyone searching for a
reputable kennel about accepting the Initialed credentials (AKC, CKC, USDA, etc. ) without knowing what they mean. Be sure to
research exactly what is entailed when someone touts a credential. You may be getting a false sense of security by those
stunning initials.
Our facility is always open to inspection by anyone who is interested. Just give us a call and schedule a time to stop by. Also, our
kennel is right by the road, so it is viewed thousands of times a day by passersby. I am posting all of our puppy protocols on this
page so all will know what happens to their puppies before they go to their forever home. There are also references from
customers on this site. If you would like more references, be sure to give us a call or email.
Puppy Socialization
Different dog breeds exhibit different levels of dominance. All dogs within a breed have different personalities, no two dogs are the
same. We carefully chose breeds that have overall low dominance and aggression levels. That said, studies show that puppies
are composed of 35% genetics, and the other 65% of their physical and emotional makeup is derived from management, training
and nutrition during the early formative stages of their life. The military developed a program called "Developing High Achievers"
some years ago. We have adopted this program into our kennel this year. Our puppies are managed by a method called "early
neurological stimulation" (ENS). Studies show that puppies receiving ENS have stronger immune systems, better heart rates and
also mature at a faster rate. For those interested in this fascinating process, go to www.breedingbetterdogs.com
Our puppies receive training and socialization on a daily basis. All puppies display low levels of dominance due to this training.
Some of the hallmarks of a puppy that displays low levels of dominance and proper socialization are: When the stall door is
opened, puppies come bounding out of the stall, tail wagging, head up, excited to meet people. When they are viewed by potential
owners, they wag their tails and "talk" to people. Puppies turned quickly upside and laid atop a forearm, with one hand lightly
across the chest will happily lay for at least ten seconds, indicating a secure, happy puppy. Our final two steps in this process are
to leave the mother with the puppies until they are 5-6 weeks of age. Studies have shown that puppies removed too early from
their mothers display signs of hypershyness and have trouble getting along with their siblings and other dogs when they are
older. Also, client visits to the nursery are limited to 15 minutes and two people at a time. We have observed over stimulation of
puppies and mothers when visitors overstay this 15 minute period. This is characterized by mothers hiding their food, turning it
over and covering it with their bedding. Over stimulated puppies hide in the corner and shake.
Our nutrition program is a great one. We recommend two different puppy foods. Royal Canin is a great food, and number one
among European breeders. For more information on this wonderful food, visit www.royalcanin.com
Our other favorite food is Diamond. More information about this great product can be found at www.diamondpetfood.com
Our Health Protocol
Vaccinations
Every kennel facility should be affiliated with at least one veterinarian that is available to them 24/7. We are so blessed to be
associated with a wonderful veterinary hospital. We also use protocols utilized by Dr. Bob Page in Dresden Tennessee. Dr. Page
is a developer of several vaccines currently used by breeders and veterinarians. He is a well known researcher and has been of
great assistance to dog breeders nationwide. Our puppies receive two or three vaccinations to assist in protecting them against
puppy illness. A complete health record goes home with every puppy from the Farm. Vaccines protocols have changed drastically
over the last few years. There is great danger in over vaccinating your dog. We recommend the following vaccine protocol for your
dog after he comes home to you. (Adopted by the UC Davis Home School of Veterinary Medicine). We use the Neopar vaccine
developed by Dr. Page, as well as the Galaxy (Schering/Plough) 5-way, also recommended by Dr. Page. He states this is the only
vaccine that crosses the maternal antibody barrier for the best prevention of puppy illnesses.
Core Vaccines your puppy should receive after leaving the Farm 1)A vaccine called a 5-way which covers Parvovirus (2),
Distemper, Parainfluenza, and Corona virus at 16 weeks or older . This vaccine should be repeated one year later. After this
date, revaccination is recommended ONLY every three (3) years. 2) Rabies vaccination should be given at 16 weeks of age. After
that time, you must follow your state's recommendations for this vaccination, although most Rabies vaccines are valid for three (3)
years once the one year booster has been given. There are other vaccines you may need, that fall under the category of non core
vaccines. Check with UCDAVIS for more information. However, under no circumstances should any puppy or dog receive more
than one vaccination at a time.
Worming and treatment for Protozoa
Our worming and protozoa prevention protocol is included in Dr. Page's "Best Practices". We use Marquis for prevention of
coccidiosis until the age of 5 weeks. We treat for Giardia at the time of weaning with Flagyl. All of our dogs are fed Diatomaceous
Earth (DE) every day. Our puppies are fed DE from the time they are able to eat. DE is proven to kill all parasites naturally. THINK
GREEN!! Our puppies are fed no harsh chemicals or pesticides. This product is all natural and kills fleas, ticks, lice and other
nasty critters. For more information on DE, or to make a purchase, go to dirtworks
Our Cleanliness Protocol
One of the most time consuming parts of kennel work is cleanliness. No one should breed animals that does not like to clean.
We clean in our nursery daily with either OXINE, or ROCAL. Both of these products have a high kill rate for 99% of all nasty germs.
They are used in most veterinary hospitals. Our floors, stalls and walls are cleaned daily. All puppies have rugs to lay on and
papers for papertraining. Our mothers go to the nursery at 30 days of gestation (64 days is the average gestation) to be closely
monitored. We make every effort to check our nursery every 3 hours. Our kennel is cleaned daily by a great staff. There is an
attendant in our kennel 4 hours a day, spending time with our adult dogs. Both our kennel and nursery is heated and
airconditioned. Our puppy stalls are 2'x4', very roomy for a litter of tiny puppies.
I hope this information is helpful in understanding of what goes in to making a wonderful Puppy Love Farms Puppy.
